Throughout Switzerland, TanzPlan Ost is a unique project – structurally, politically, and ideologically. In 2009, eight Cantons of East Switzerland (Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Appenzell Innerrhoden, Glarus, Graubünden, Schaffhausen, St. Gallen, Thurgau, and Zurich) and the Principality of Liechtenstein aimed to coordinate efforts to promote dance following a common model. As a result, TanzPlan Ost was created in the same year. The Festival organization and activities are financed through the NPO ig dance ost.

Since 2010, every two years from summer to autumn, TanzPlan Ost has gone on tour in East Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein. The two- to three-day program presents regionally based companies, a guest project featuring internationally renowned choreographers as well as an accompanying program with educational/mediation events. The aim of the coordinated promotion of dance is to strengthen the independent scene in the region of East Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein through more visibility and by increasing awareness of contemporary dance among the general public. In addition to networking and mediation/education, TanzPlan Ost is committed to improving basic working conditions for dancers in the region and expanding performance opportunities for subsidized productions.

Gisa Frank, artistic director, Eli Frey, production director, and Ingrid Fäh, touring director, were initially responsible for building up the project. In 2012 Aline Feichtinger took over the project management, from 2015-2017 Miriam Haltiner. The core team of TanzPlan Ost consists of choreographer Simone Truong as artistic director (since 2014) and Linda Zobrist as project manager (since 2017).
